Bio

Dr Bephyer Parey is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). She was a PhD student at the SALISES and after being awarded a PhD in Social Policy in June 2019 from the UWI, she joined the SALISES staff in August 2019.
Her PhD thesis was titled “Essays on Disability in Trinidad: A Mixed Methods Approach examined disability in Trinidad” and consisted of four papers: (i) teachers’ attitudes towards the inclusion of children with disabilities, (ii) accommodations in schools for the inclusion of children with disabilities, (iii) wellbeing of working-age persons with disabilities, and (iv) employers’ attitudes towards the inclusion of working-age persons with disabilities in open employment. With the overall aim of providing policy recommendations for a life-course oriented inclusion of persons with disabilities, her current research also covers wellbeing among children and older persons with disabilities, social care among older persons with disabilities, and accessibility within the workplace and home.

Holding a BSc in Mathematics and MSc in Statistics from the UWI, Dr. Parey has a quantitative background, and has used these skills extensively in her own research and to facilitate SPSS and STATA Laboratory Sessions for the Masters of Science programme in Development Statistics at the SALISES during the periods 2015 to 2017 and 2019 to 2020. Her teaching experience also includes Introduction to Mathematics, Introduction to Statistics and Engineering Statistics at the UWI from 2008 to 2010, and she was Lecturer for the postgraduate courses Techniques of Applied Social Statistical Analysis and Research Design and Management at the SALISES from 2020 to 2022. She has expertise in qualitative and mixed methods research which she gained through various training, including at the University of Michigan, USA, and their application in her own research.

She has a track record of high-quality international publications, experience in organising public forums and conferences, and to date has presented her research in over thirty regional and international conferences including in South Africa, Europe (Austria, Denmark, Ireland), United Kingdom, the USA and the Caribbean. Currently, she serves on the One UWI Gender Equity and Justice Strategic & Research Committee, the SALISES Internal Ethics Committee, the UWISTA Faculty of Social Sciences OHSE Committee, and is chair of the SALISES Disability Studies Research Cluster.

Research Cluster

Name of Cluster: Disability Studies

Aim of Cluster: The main aim of the Disability Studies Research Cluster is to conduct research related to persons with disabilities in the Caribbean region for the purpose of promoting evidence-based policies geared towards their improved livelihoods and their full participation in society. The Cluster will also host both public and academic forums to share findings emerging from its research, as well as collaborate with other academic and non-academic organisations in the region in the conduct and dissemination of disability research.
